Apple Event Recap
Though there was a frustrating technical issue at the beginning of the Apple Keynote, it still left me pleased and ready to upgrade my iPhone.
If you read my predictions yesterday, I was happy to get the majority of them correct.
Apple jumped straight to the iPhone and introduced the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. The iPhone 6 will have a 4.7" screen and the 6 Plus will have a 5.5" screen. Both will feature something that I have been waiting years for ... NFC technology. The feature that excites me the most is Apple Pay. With NFC and Touch ID, users (with the new iPhone) can now pay for products at select stores just by holding their phone next to a kiosk and using their fingerprint (Touch ID) to verify. Say goodbye to the wallet!
Apple also is introducing a 128 GB phone model (eliminating the 32 GB option). I don't see me needing 128 GB on my iPhone, yet, but I do plan to upgrade to the 64 GB option.
The phones will also have improvements to the camera and new chips.
After revealing the new iPhones Tim Cook came back to the stage and said the iconic words from Steve Jobs, "We have one more thing ...".
He then cued the video and we were introduced to the Apple Watch.
The hardware design was not very impressive, but the software was the "wow" factor here.
The watch does have a touch screen and also includes a 'digital crown' which is a wheel on the right side used to scroll. Tapping the crown takes the user back to the main screen.
The watch comes in three options: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch Edition. There will even be an 18 carat gold option! There will also be a lot of wrist band options to choose from.
The watch will have a big part of tracking health and fitness and it also has the Apple Pay feature.
What really excites me for the watch is 3rd party companies can build apps for it!
There were a lot of questions unanswered on the watch but we do know it will not be released until early 2015 and the starting price is $349.
The keynote ended with a performance from U2 and then they announced their new album and it is available, through iTunes, for FREE until mid-October.
I was really happy with the announcements from this years iPhone event. Clearly this event was all about the new watch, but as an iOS Developer I'm ready to upgrade and start building more beautiful apps for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
